Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabit (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ)
The epic story of Asim ibn Thabit (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) is a powerful testament to his
unwavering faith, sacrifice, and devotion to Islam. Known as Ḥamī ad-Dabr (the one protected by bees), his most famous and heroic
narrative is from the Expedition of al-Raji, where a miraculous act of divine
protection was witnessed by his enemies.
Asim ibn Thabit (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) Arabic: عاصم بن ثابت) was one of the Ansar, a person belonging to one of the first generations of Muslims and who helped Muhammad after he migrated to Madinah.
Asim ibn Thabit (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) in the Battle of Badr. Rasulullah ﷺ’s forces included Sayidina Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with him) , Sayidina Umar Ibn Al Khattab (Allah be pleased with him) Sayidina Ali Ibn Abi Talib (Allah be pleased with him), Sayidina Hamzah Ibn Abdul Muttalib (Allah be pleased with him), Sayidina Mus`ab ibn `Umair (Allah be pleased with him), Sayidina Az-Zubair bin Al-‘Awam (Allah be pleased with him), Sayidina Ammar ibn Yasir (Allah be pleased with him) and Sayidina Abu Dhār al-Ghifari (Allah be pleased with him).
The Muslims also brought seventy camels and two horses, meaning that
they either had to walk or fit three to four men per camel. However, many early
Muslim sources indicate that no serious fighting was expected, and the future
Saiyidina Othman Ibn Affan (Allah be pleased with him) stayed behind to
care for his sick wife Ruqayyah (Allah be pleased with her) the daughter
of Rasulullah ﷺ. Salman Al
Farisi رضي الله عنه could not join the battle, as he was still
not a free man.
Asim ibn Thabit رضي الله عنه also participated in
the Invasion of Hamra al-Assad. After staying at Hamra al-Assad for three days,
Rasulullah ﷺ returned
to Madinah. Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه Abu Azzah al-Jumahiرضي الله عنه as a prisoner. Abu Azzah al-Jumahiرضي الله عنه had previously been one of the prisoners of Badr. Abu Azzah al-Jumahiرضي الله عنه had been treated kindly by Rasulullah ﷺ after the Battle of Badr. Being a poor man with daughters, he had no means to pay ransom, he was released after the Battle of Badr, on the condition that he would not take up arms against Muslims
again. But he had broken his promise and participated in the Battle of Uhud. Abu Azzah al-Jumahiرضي الله عنه pleaded for mercy again, but Rasulullah ﷺ ordered him to be killed.
Az-Zubair رضي الله عنه him, and in another version, Asim ibn
Thabitرضي الله عنه.
The father of one of Umar’s wives, Umm Kulthum bint Asim رضي الله عنها was Asim ibn Thabit رضي الله عنه is not clear if that person is the same person as the subject of this article is with regards to Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.
Hadith about Asim Ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه narrated by Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه …
A narration attributed to Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه :
Rasulullah ﷺ sent out ten men on a scouting expedition and put ‘Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه. in command of them. They proceeded until they reached Had'a, which is between ‘Usfan and Makkah.
This occurred during the Expedition of Al Raji. In 625, some men requested that
Rasulullah ﷺ send
instructors to teach them Islam, but the men were bribed by the two tribes of
Khuzaymah, who wanted revenge for the assassination of Khalid bin Sufian by
Rasulullah ﷺ’s followers, and they killed the Muslims.
Their presence was reported to a branch of Hudhayl called the Banu
Lihyan. About a hundred men, who were all archers, set out after them. They
followed their tracks. When Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه. and his companions perceived them, they took cover. The people surrounded
them and said, ‘Come down and give yourselves up! You have protection and
assurance that we will not kill any of you!’
Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه. said, ‘O people! As for me, I will not come down into the protection of an unbeliever! O Allah, inform Your Prophet about us!’ They shot at them with arrows and killed Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. A group of three came down, accepting the offer of protection and security. They included Khubayb al-Ansari (Allah be pleased with him), Zayd ibn Dathina رضي الله عنه, and another man. Rasulullah ﷺ informed his Companions about them on the day they fell. When they were informed that Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه. had been killed, some of the unbelievers of Quraish were sent to bring part of him that could be recognized. He had killed one of their great men on the Day of Badr. After killing Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه., Hudhayl wanted to sell his head.
Allah SWT sent over Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه. a swarm of bees like a cloud and
it protected him from their messengers, and they could not cut off any part of
him.”
A brief story on why the hatred and revengefulness of the unbelievers to Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه., and this took place after the “Battle of Uhud”
Ever despaired in your Du’as?
Ever thought that they are not answered or that Allah Azza Wa Jal doesn’t respond?
Then, let me narrate to you of another story of ‘Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه..
During the Battle of Uhud, when the Muslims purportedly faced defeat, though not reliably authenticated of the fact, the Quraish celebrated their revenge, but this was not enough for the ladies of their tribes. Hind, the woman who slaughtered the body of Saiyidina Hamzah Ibn Abd Mutalib رضي الله عنه.., together with other women, started to go out on the battlefield and started to dance and desecrate the dead bodies of the Mujahideen. Astagfirullah!
Narrations say that in the passionate desire for revenge, these women slit up the bellies of the Mujahideen, gouged out their eyes, and cut off their noses and their ears. One woman among them shaped an anklet of the nose of a Mujahideen and put it on her fee,t and started dancing joyfully amidst the dead bodies.
Astagfirullah!
But then came out Salafah Bint Sa’ad, who was very different from the
other women. She was anxious about her family, so she started to look for them. She searched high and low until she found the body of her husband, soaked in his
own blood, and near him were her sons, Mustafa, Kalab, and Jalas, who were
breathing their last.
On this,s Salafah asked who killed them, and Jalas said it was ‘Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه...Hearing this, Salafah started to scream and swore by the false gods ‘Uzza and Lat that her rage could not die down until she had taken revenge on ‘Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. and drank wine from his skull.
After this, she indeed proclaimed that she would give any amount for the person who can bring her the head of ‘Asim ibn Thabit, and this spread like fire amongst the Quraish. So one by one they started to search for Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه...
After the Battle of Uhud, Rasulullah ﷺ sent the Sahabah RA on a special mission with ‘Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه, ' its leader.
They were a few miles from Makkah when a group of Banu Hudhayl
pursued them and ambushed them. The people tried to bribe the Sahabah (Allah be
pleased with them) told them that they won’t be killed as long as they lay down
their weapons.
Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. all his courage said “I will not lay down my weapons before the Mushrikeen!”
Then, he remembered the swearing of Salafah, and he prayed:
“O Allah! I protect and defend your faith and have Mercy on me and protect my flesh and my bones; please do not allow them to fall into the hands of the enemy.”
After this, Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. the enemy with two of his companions, they fought fiercely until they were martyred one by one. The three others surrendered and were killed, one committed suicide, and the other 2 killed by the Banu Hudhayl.
Now, this is where the power of du’a comes. After a few hours of the martyrdom of Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.., the Quraish learnt of the whereabouts of his body, which was lying in the area inhabited by the Banu Hudhayl..
So, with the hungry bellies of the Quraish for money, they started to give a lot of money to their messengers so that they could succeed in getting the head of Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه...
When they succeeded, some men of the Banu Hudhayl went to the place where the body of Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. was lying; when they were near it to cut off his head, they found a whole lot of bees, wasps and hornets surrounding the body and head of Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه...Whenever they attempted to cut it, these bees and wasps would attack them so they couldn’t do anything but give up and wait for nightfall.
The sun had not yet set when, suddenly, dense clouds appeared in the sky, the very air seemed to tremble with the thunder, and heavy rains had fallen.
Soon, the streets and roads took on the appearance of streams, low-lying areas were filled, and there was water everywhere. It rained heavily the whole night, and the Banu Hudhayl went back to their homes.
Next morning, they came out to get the head of Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. as they went towards the field, the body was nowhere to be found. The flood washed it away to some unknown place; they searched high and low, but the body of Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. disappeared like dust in the wind.
Subhan’Allah. Look how Allah Azza Wa Jall responded to the du’a of His faithful servant Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه... Allah SWT sent down wasps and bees to cover his body as protection to these people who had the intention to use his limbs and whatever is left of him into a devilish and sinful act of drinking wine. Allah SWT sent down heavy rain so that his body won’t be found and away from the Mushrikeen.
Allah Azza Wa Jal will never allow the Mushrikeen to triumph over the
Mu’mineen, and this is how he protects His faithful servants. Similarly, in
Palestine, the Kuffar may plan anything against the Mu’mineen, but the Divine
Plan overcomes all other plans.
Indeed, the story of Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. truly reminds us of one of the
famous
“Ayat of the Qur’an” where Allah Azza Wa Jall says:
وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدْعُونِىٓ أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِى سَيَدْخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِينَ ٦٠Your Lord has proclaimed, “Call upon Me, I will respond to you. Surely those who are too proud to worship Me will enter Hell, fully humbled.”
[Surah Ghafir/40:Ayat 60]
So never despair of His Mercy and never underestimate the power of your
du’a. Remember Allah Azza Wa Jall knows what you are about to ask Him even if
you haven’t uttered them. He is within You, Your heart itself, calls upon Allah
Azza Wa Jall with every beat.
“Rabb. Rabb. Rabb. La Hawla wala Quwwata illa billah.”

The Expedition & Tragedy of Al-Raji.
The Expedition of al-Raji In the fourth year after the
Hijra (migration), the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) sent
a delegation of ten companions, led by Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه..on a scouting mission
to learn about the polytheists near Makkah. The companions were ambushed by the
tribes of Banu Lihyan and Hudhayl, who wanted revenge because Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. had killed
one of their leaders at the Battle of Badr.
Surrounded by roughly 100 archers, the polytheists
offered the companions a promise of security if they would surrender. Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه. remembering the treachery of the polytheists, refused, declaring, "By
Allah, I will not come down into the protection of an unbeliever!".
Instead, he chose to fight to his last breath, upholding his pledge of loyalty
to Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ).
Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه..'s prayer and martyrdom
Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. and his men took refuge on a hillock and fought valiantly. Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. prayed, saying, "O Allah! I protected Your religion at the beginning of the day. Now, at the end of the day, protect my body! Do not allow the polytheists to touch my body".
After using his arrows, spear, and sword, Asim was eventually killed. When the polytheists, eager to mutilate his body and claim the reward offered for his head, approached him, a miraculous event occurred. A swarm of bees, like a dark cloud, suddenly appeared and encircled Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه..'s body. Every time a polytheist drew near, the bees attacked them, driving them back.
The enemies decided to wait until evening, assuming the bees would leave. But Allah sent a heavy, unexpected rain that caused a flood, which washed Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه..'s body away to an unknown location, fulfilling his prayer that his body would be protected from his enemies.
Key achievements and lessons
Courage and defiance: Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه..'s refusal to surrender to
treachery, even when faced with overwhelming odds, demonstrated his profound
courage and loyalty to his faith. He chose martyrdom over compromise.
Divine protection: The miracle of the bees and the flood shows how Allah honors and protects His righteous servants. The incident confirmed Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه..'s closeness to Allah, who answered his specific prayer.
Archery at Badr: During the pivotal Battle of Badr, Asim's military strategy as a master archer played a significant role in the Muslim victory. His tactical suggestions were even approved and adopted by the Prophet (ﷺ).
Steadfastness at Uhud: Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. was among the few
companions who remained firm and protected the Prophet (ﷺ)
during the Battle of Uhud after others had fallen into disarray.
The story of Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. is celebrated as one of
the most epic examples of self-sacrifice and faith in Islamic history. His
devotion is commemorated not just for his actions in life, but for the divine
protection he received in death, a powerful sign of his high status with Allah.
Those who were saved from the darkness of polytheism, unbelief and oppression in the Era of Bliss had a completely different life after attaining the luminous light of Islam, and they abandoned everything related to their old days. Anything that reminded them of their life before Islam caused them great suffering. This mood also affected Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.., who was a person from Madinah and who became a Muslim before the Pledge of Aqaba, in a different way.
After becoming a Muslim, Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. decided not to touch any polytheists and not to allow any polytheists to touch him. He always prayed to Allah Almighty to continue this decision.
Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. joined the Battle of Badr and killed many of the notables of the polytheists. After the Battle of Uhud, a congregation from the tribes of Adal and Qara came to the Messenger of Allah and asked him to send a delegation to them to teach them Islam. The Messenger of Allah sent a delegation headed by Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. to them. However, the people who came to the Messenger of Allah had evil intentions. They planned to trap the Muslims and sell them to Makkan polytheists; thus, they would get a lot of money from them. When they arrived in Raji, they revealed their plan, and the Muslim delegates were surrounded by Bedouins with swords.
They said, "We do not want to kill you. Our
intention is to sell you to Makkans and to get some rewards from them.
Surrender!"
How could Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. and his friends who saw this
betrayal with their own eyes could trust these cruel polytheists? Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. answered
them as follows:
"I swore beforehand that I would never accept the
protection of polytheists. By Allah, I will never believe in the protection and
promise of the unbelievers, and I will never surrender to unbelievers."
Then, he started to throw arrows at the polytheists by
saying, "O Allah! Inform the Prophet about our situation!" When he
threw arrows, he recited poem
s: "Death
is true; life is empty and ephemeral / Whatever is written in fate (qadar) will
happen / People will go to Allah sooner
or later. / If I do not fight you, let me die!"
Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. had seven arrows in his quiver. He killed one polytheist with each arrow. When he ran out of arrows, he hit the polytheists with his spear. When his spear was broken, he drew his sword. He broke the sheath of his sword and prayed as follows:
"O Allah! I protected your religion at the
beginning of today. Now protect my body at the end of today! "Do not allow
the polytheists to touch my body."
Finally, he was wounded in both legs and fell down.
Sons of Lihyan martyred seven Companions, including Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. by arrows.
The polytheists wanted to cut off his head; they wanted to take his head to Shuhayd's daughter and receive a reward from him. For Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. had killed her father, who was a polytheist, at Badr. His daughter, called "Sulafa," promised that she would give a reward to the person who cut off Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه..'s head and brought it to her.
The polytheists of Huzayl rushed to cut off Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه..'s head. However, a group of bees suddenly appeared around Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه... The bee community resembled a dark cloud, and they clung to the faces of those approaching Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه..’s dead body; they disturbed the polytheists and prevented them from approaching the dead body. The bees were protecting Asim's body. No matter how hard the polytheists tried, they could not cut off even a small part of the body of Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه... They said, "Let us wait for the evening. We will come and cut off his head after the bees leave." However, Allah Almighty sent unexpected rain in the evening, and it rained all the time; the flood caused by the rain took the body of Asim bin Thabit away. The polytheists could not reach their goal.
Allah Almighty protected the blessed body of Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. from the polytheists after his martyrdom by His mercy as He protected his body from the fury of the polytheists when he was alive. Saiyidina Asim ibn Thabitرضي الله عنه.. had not touched the polytheists, and the polytheists could not touch him. Allah accepted his prayer. [1]
